They were the Confederates — Southern Democrats who wanted slavery to not only continue, but to spread to the West as well. The Republican Party came into to being to prevent this from happening. How the two political parties seem to have switched views since those days would require volumes to explain. But take a look at these young men and look into their eyes…looking into destiny as they look at the photographer taking their picture. These young Democrats tbought they were on the right side of history…just like they do today. Over 200,000 of them paid the ultimate price for their need to have that “peculiar institution” continue. Today they practice a different form of that peculiar institution, via economics as well as their weaponization of the media.
