Introductions

The War between the States aka the U.S. Civil War lasted for four long years and cost America many lives on both sides. It was bad enough that families were split up along War lines, but what was worse is that so much of the history was lost due to longlasting bad feelings, historical revisions, and racism. Each state had its own recollection on the war, and statues were created as memorials. So of course someone in a Northern state might disagree with a statue of a Southern military hero in a Southern state, but its that state’s history, right or wrong. Still, America did not want to be reminded of its mistakes. Schoolteachers tried teaching it one way in white schools and differently once Black children were integrated into schools in the Sixties. A big reason that the war began was that the Southern Democrats did not want to give up the slavery, so the Republicans in the North formed in an effort to stop slavery from heading west to California, which was already happening.
